| Obligatory Taj Mahal shot. Unlike Mumtaz Mahal no-one has loved me enough to build me a Taj Mahal but I don't care. I am travelling and life is great. |
The Ritz in Paris.
There is a story that Hemingway stayed here with his wife who hated his heavy drinking. One night Hemingway asked the bartender to make him a drink that she would not detect, so the barman created a drink with vodka and tomato juice and Hemmingway drank those all night.
The next day the bartender asked Hemmingway how it went. "Great," said the great writer. "Bloody Mary did not detect a thing".
I was told this story by a tour guide as I stood outside the Ritz and I have realised it may well be true. A story that Hemmingway wrote in 1956 called "A Room on the Garden Side", has just been published for the first time. It is set at the Ritz where he was staying when he wrote it. Hemingway was married four times. His wife at the time was called Mary.
